Until only recently, pigeon hunting in Uruguay did not really get the respect it deserved.  Although the volume is not as high as Paraguay pigeon hunting, pigeon hunting in Uruguay over decoys can be very exciting.  Furthermore, one can combine the great pigeon shooting in Uruguay with other wingshooting venues such as: duck hunting, Perdiz hunting, high volume dove hunting, and even fishing for Golden Dorado!

Pigeons Over Decoys = Pure Excitement!

Decoying pigeons:  they posses the excitement of duck hunting, the volume of a dove hunt, and the uniqueness of a Perdiz hunt…after all, what do your friends say when you tell them you are going to hunt pigeons???  Pigeons fly fast (even though they don’t look like it), and are tougher than nails (even though they really don’t look too tough). 

IF you think you are a good shot, you need to try to give decoyed pigeon hunting a try—this will bring a tear to the eye of even the saltiest master class clay shooter.  Even when you score a hit, it become readily apparent that these are no clay pigeons: they are Spotwing and Picazuro Pigeons that are capable of acrobatic flight that would leave Duane Cole’s head spinning. 

Pigeon Hunting in Uruguay

One of the best things about pigeon hunting Uruguay is the fact that one need not rise at early hours like they would have had to do if duck hunting; instead, waking up for coffee at 8:00AM and easing out to the field for the morning flights that will arrive at approximately 9:00AM.  No waders, no hip boots, no need for foul weather gear…this is a gentleman’s hunt if there ever were one.

Indeed, unlike Paraguay pigeon hunting, Uruguay pigeon hunting is not hard work—for the clients at least.  Your guides and bird boys will have your set up ready to go, and pigeons will be flying all over the place the moment you enter your blind.   Mojo doves powered by double A batteries will entice the pigeons into close range, where they will decoy readily into close range.

Shooters can expect to expend eight to ten boxes of shotgun shells during a morning shoot, and then go out for high volume dove in the afternoon—or Perdiz.  The trip is normally three to four days, and will conclude with a morning pigeon hunt followed by a trip back to the airport in Montevideo for a flight back to the USA or Europe, as applicable.
